Wood Floor Sanding
My wooden floor isn’t in the best condition, do I renovate or replace?
Wooden floors can be beautiful but if neglected can look dreadful scratched or badly marked, dull or faded lacquer and at worst being loose or even broken. If you have a floor like this don’t despair there are a few options available, you could just cover it up and do something with it later or you could replace it with a new one. A new floor can be very time consuming and very costly with parquet coming in at an around £95-130m2 fitted. The happy medium is to renovate the floor by sanding it back which will give you a new floor with less expense less time and should last a very long time too as I would be lucky to see a sanding client twice in my lifetime.
DIY Vs Professional
The next tricky decision is weather to tackle the job yourself or get a professional in. For the D.I.Y. enthusiast when using a floor sander, perhaps the greatest danger is that you will leave the imprint or marks from the sander all over your floor. The bulk and weight of this machine are the major culprits with this particular problem. It is nearly impossible for the amateur to manage this task without leaving some kind of mark. These marks are often referred to as ‘chatter marks’.
It is hard for the novice floor sander to identify exactly which type of equipment would be best suited to the job where a professional would know this information and avoid potential damage to your floor by selecting the wrong sander. If you choose a sander that is too powerful for your floors, you could very well end up with holes in your floors and a need for a new floor rather than simply refinishing the floor.
It is highly recommended that if you plan to stain your wood floors you seek the services of a professional for the sanding as this requires a high skill level.
What’s possible?
